My Hot Bikram Experience

Hi everyone,

I just want to start off by saying thank you to some of you who have sent me messages about your happiness jars. I found it really touching that I was able to inspire you or at least motivate you to do that. Please keep sending me those messages! 🙂

Today I just want to tell you about my first attempt at Bikram Yoga. For those of you who aren’t familiar with it, this is a video that I watched before I decided to give it a go:

Bikram Yoga

So, I have quite mixed feelings about my first yoga session for a few reasons. The first thing I wanted to say was that, as you know, I had been unwell the week before with a cold/flu type thing. I was feeling better by Monday but if I’m honest, I wasn’t feeling 100%. I wanted to get back into training and exercising because I had been at home most of the week before. Yes, I’m one of those people that grows impatient when I’m ill and tries to jump straight back into a regular routine asap.

I think this may have affected me in a negative way and definitely had an impact on how I felt about the session. The heat in the room was like a sauna environment and it is safe to say that I have NEVER sweat so much before. I was wearing my usual gym clothing, leggings and a top, but I found myself stripping off throughout the class and lifting up my leggings to knee length. This didn’t really put me off though, sweating during a work out is good. However, the heat was very overwhelming for 90 minutes, I found myself feeling nauseous at some points and having to sit down and take a break throughout the class. It was also very unfortunate that after the class, I felt like I had been hit by a bus and felt extremely weak. Not to mention, my chest felt tight and I began to cough quite a lot. Since then, my flu symptoms came back with a vengeance and my chest was very phlegmy the next day. I have been resting ever since. 😦

I know this review seems quite negative but don’t get me wrong, the experience as a whole was quite interesting for me. I have bought an unlimited months pass to the Bikram classes because that was the cheapest option as a beginner. I am curious to see how my body will react to it once I am feeling at full health because I did enjoy the postures & my skin was actually glowing when I left. I will not let this put me off & I will try again.

The lesson I have learnt is probably very obvious to most of you but I am very stubborn (sometimes) at my own peril, do NOT go back to any form of exercise unless you have FULLY recovered from any illness. All you will do is weaken your body and make yourself worse. I have now regressed and had to have another week of rest with medicine and tlc. I will let you know how it goes next time. This is not the end of my Bikram experience! 😉

Does anyone else do Bikram Yoga? Or are any of you yoga bunnies? If so, let me know which type you prefer and why. Would love to hear about it.

My 2013 Happiness Jar

Today I went out with my family to a shop that sells home decor. As I was walking around the kitchen section, I noticed lots of little jars for storing tea, cookies, sugar etc. Anyway, it reminded me of this picture that I saw a while ago:

I remember reading this and thinking, “I’m gonna do that!” but I didn’t find a jar and then just forgot about it. So, I took it as a sign and bought this cute little jar for £2:

I thought it was quite cute and decided to put a little label on it saying 2013 and wrote my first note…

The purpose of the jar for me is to write down achievements or funny moments throughout the year so that in 2014 I can look through them and smile. I know its slightly late in the year but, better late than never and I still have 9 whole months to fill it up with notes. My first note says: ‘Started Just Me and My Blog at the beginning of April 2013, average no. of views is 19’. I am curious to see how my page views will have changed by the end of the year. Hopefully I will have kept you interested enough to have  increased them significantly, only time will tell. 😉

Does anyone else have anything like this that they may have started in January? Have you kept it up? If so, let me know! I would love to hear it.

My Chocolate Protein & Raspberry Pancakes

So, I’ve been a bit of a sitting duck at home today & I thought, instead of having my usual protein shake with toast in the morning, I would make some pancakes. It was a bit of a random urge but I thought I’d give it a go.

So, these were my ingredients:

8oz Plain Flour (However, I include the protein powder in this measurement)
2 scoops of Arbonne chocolate protein shake mix
1/2 pint of milk
1 egg
Half a pack of fresh raspberries

Ok, so I simply started by putting all the ingredients in the bowl and whisking them… I know, really difficult, right? 😉 The only thing I didn’t just throw in were the raspberries because I didn’t want the seeds all over the mix so I just used the sieve to get all the juice out of them.

After that, I simply started to cook them as I would normally cook pancakes. Although, this mixture was quite thick compared to what I’m used to but that’s because of the protein powder. I also noticed that the mixture cooks much faster than usual. I almost burnt the first one because of how quickly it was ready. I’m not sure if this has anything to do with the protein either because this is my first attempt at any protein baking.

From the amount of ingredients used, I got 5 pancakes in total. If you don’t like your pancakes very thick, then I think you would get a lot more by adding just a bit more milk. I actually liked the thickness in the end and they tasted nice and chocolatey even with my favourite filling of lemon drizzled through the middle. If I were to do them again, I prob wouldn’t add the raspberries because they were slightly bitter, maybe blueberries instead.

Do you have any protein recipes? What’s your favourite pancake filling?
I’ve seen a few brownie recipes around so maybe next time I might give them a go.

My New Health & Fitness Journey

Hi Everyone,

This is my first official post on my new blog so it’s a bit of a long one. Apologies for my blog still being a bit plain but it is still under construction. I just really wanted to get started with writing and change the layout as I go along.

As promised, I will be keeping a record of how I am getting on with my new fitness programme. For those of you who don’t know me yet, I will be completely honest and say that I am one of the most unfit people I know. Mind you, I don’t look it and according to my BMI and other health calculators, I am not in any way overweight. However, I have never truly loved my body and I’ve always wanted to tone up, I just never cared about it enough to really focus on it.

Anyway, this year I have decided to change the way I think about myself and keep positive. Therefore, instead of complaining about my belly and my ‘soft’ areas, I am going to do something about it. My target areas are: tummy, bum and bingo wings! 😉 I do appreciate that it isn’t possible to target specific fatty areas, so I’m also aiming for increase in general stamina, muscle and energy levels. In general, exercising is definitely not my favourite thing to do and I will be trying out new and different ways to keep myself focussed. I am tired of being unfit and using the old: “I don’t have time”, “Oh, but I hate the gym and can’t afford it” or even “I’m not unhealthy really so what’s the point?” The point is this; I do actually want to show myself off and if I don’t care about my health now, I will regret it when I’m older. I want to feel a sense of achievement in reaching my goal and inspire others to do the same.

Where I am so far:

Just to fill you in on how I’m getting on, I’ve pretty much just started my journey. I started on a healthy eating plan for one week and felt motivated, the following week I carried on eating well and started a weight training plan in which I trained three times that week. This week is now coming up to the end of week 3 and I have carried on eating healthily but I am unwell! 😦 I haven’t trained this week at all and have been in bed most of the time.

So…. I realised that if I didn’t find a way to motivate myself back into my routine, I will let this bad week ruin my progress and that is where my blog comes in. I am still recovering from this flu but I know by next week I will feel better. I have scheduled my gym sessions for next week, three times as usual! I know that by posting my efforts and with some encouragement from you (hopefully) I will definitely reach my goals.

If anyone else has weight loss or fitness goals then please share them! It’ll be fun to connect and motivate each other.
